India has some of the strictest SIM registration for visitors: a local SIM needs passport, visa, photo and address checks in person. A foreign travel eSIM avoids that, but it cannot receive the Indian one-time codes that many apps rely on.
Mobile networks in India
The main networks are listed below. A travel eSIM connects to one of them or to a partner, and the provider decides which, so the network named in the plan details is worth a look if coverage matters on your route.
SIM rules and ID for visitors
A local SIM generally needs your original passport, Indian visa or OCI card, a passport photo and a local address, with in-person identity checks. Local eSIMs follow the same checks.
Rules change
Registration and phone rules are updated by governments and operators without much notice. Check the current position with the operator or the provider before you travel.
Using a travel eSIM in India
Airport counters
Airtel is described as the operator with counters in international arrivals at major airports, while others do not sell tourist SIMs there.
Local eSIM needs an Indian number
Online activation of a local eSIM needs an existing Indian number for a one-time code, so a visitor usually cannot activate one from abroad.
Travel eSIM trade-off
A foreign travel eSIM bought before you fly needs no Indian identity check. It is data only, so it cannot receive Indian one-time codes or support UPI on its own.
Street vendors
Avoid street sellers. Some SIMs are registered under other people's identities and may be deactivated.
Check before you fly
- You know whether you need a local number for payments and apps.
- Passport, visa and a local address are ready if you buy a local SIM.
- The phone is unlocked and supports eSIM.
- You have installed the eSIM on Wi-Fi and know how to switch the line on when you land. The guide on when to buy and install covers the timing.
Which plan fits a trip to India
For a short visit with mostly maps and messaging, a data-only travel eSIM bought at home is the easy route. Stay longer or need payments and OTPs, and a local SIM with full registration may be worth the effort. The destination guides page explains the difference between local, regional and global plans, and our multi-country guide walks through route choices.
