Travel eSIM for Japan

Japan has four main mobile networks, and for most visitors a data-only travel eSIM is all they need. The gaps to plan for are a local phone number, which some services ask for, and the strict ID rules around number-based plans.

Mobile networks in Japan

The main networks are listed below. A travel eSIM connects to one of them or to a partner, and the provider decides which, so the network named in the plan details is worth a look if coverage matters on your route.

SIM rules and ID for visitors

Data-only travel eSIMs bought online are generally described as needing no ID. Physical visitor SIMs and any plan that comes with a Japanese phone number are sold at counters and need a passport, because phone numbers in Japan are subject to strict identity checks.

Rules change

Registration and phone rules are updated by governments and operators without much notice. Check the current position with the operator or the provider before you travel.

Using a travel eSIM in Japan

Data only, no local number

Travel eSIMs are normally data only. Calls and messages go through apps such as WhatsApp, LINE or FaceTime, and your home SIM can stay on for texts and bank codes.

Install before you fly

Add the eSIM on Wi-Fi at home. After landing, switch on the Japan line and turn on data roaming for that line. Many QR codes work once only, so do not delete the profile.

Which network it uses

A travel eSIM runs on one of the main networks and the provider decides which. The network name is in the plan details, so look for it if coverage in a specific region matters.

If you prefer a physical SIM

Prepaid visitor SIMs are sold at airports, big electronics stores and some convenience stores, and can be reserved for pickup. Bring your passport.

Check before you fly

  • The phone is carrier-unlocked and supports eSIM.
  • You can live without a Japanese number: taxi apps, restaurant bookings and event tickets sometimes ask for one.
  • Public Wi-Fi is patchier than in some countries, so do not count on it as a backup.
  • You have installed the eSIM on Wi-Fi and know how to switch the line on when you land. The guide on when to buy and install covers the timing.

Which plan fits a trip to Japan

A trip that stays in Japan fits a local plan. If you add Korea, Taiwan or Southeast Asia, compare a regional Asia plan, and check that each country is on its list. The destination guides page explains the difference between local, regional and global plans, and our multi-country guide walks through route choices.

Do I need ID to buy a travel eSIM for Japan?

For a data-only travel eSIM bought online, providers generally do not ask for ID. Physical SIMs and plans with a Japanese number are sold with a passport check.

Will I get a Japanese phone number with a travel eSIM?

Usually not. Most travel eSIMs are data only, so use messaging apps for calls and keep your home SIM for texts.

Which network does a Japan travel eSIM use?

It depends on the provider. The plan details name the network, and different sellers use different ones.
