Thailand has three well-known networks and a clear registration rule for local SIMs. A foreign travel eSIM avoids the registration step, while a local tourist SIM or eSIM needs your passport.
Mobile networks in Thailand
The main networks are listed below. A travel eSIM connects to one of them or to a partner, and the provider decides which, so the network named in the plan details is worth a look if coverage matters on your route.
SIM rules and ID for visitors
Local SIMs are registered with a valid passport. True's tourist guide describes a registration flow in its app that includes a passport scan and face matching. Tourist packages are capped at 60 days of validity.
Rules change
Registration and phone rules are updated by governments and operators without much notice. Check the current position with the operator or the provider before you travel.
Using a travel eSIM in Thailand
Local tourist eSIMs exist
True and dtac list tourist eSIMs next to physical tourist SIMs, and counters operate at airports and service centres.
Activate on arrival
True advises switching on the SIM after you arrive so that validity days are not used up in advance.
Validity is capped
Tourist packages cannot run longer than 60 days, and topping up does not extend a SIM past its expiry. After that, register again with your passport.
5G needs a 5G phone
Unlimited tourist packages list 5G among supported network types, so an older phone will fall back to 4G.
Check before you fly
- Passport in hand if you buy a local SIM or eSIM.
- The phone is unlocked and supports eSIM.
- You activate the plan on arrival rather than at home.
- You have installed the eSIM on Wi-Fi and know how to switch the line on when you land. The guide on when to buy and install covers the timing.
Which plan fits a trip to Thailand
For Thailand alone a local plan is simple. If you also visit Vietnam, Cambodia or Malaysia, a Southeast Asia regional plan avoids a new install at each border. The destination guides page explains the difference between local, regional and global plans, and our multi-country guide walks through route choices.
